Most computers are never used at anything close to their performance
limit, and often much more modest – and cheaper – systems
will prove ideal to the task.
For example, a system used for clerical tasks will typically be
configured with a 2.5-3GHz dual core CPU (a 1.5GHz single core would
suffice); 2GB RAM (1GB will do except for Vista), a 3D accelerated
graphics card (the 3D abilities will never be used), and a 250GB Hard
Disk (which will probably only ever see 20GB of documents). These
extras cost money to buy and to run, and unless you're using CAD,
video/audio editing or 3D rendering, will never be used.
So the role of each computer needs to be identified, and the system
specified for that role.
If you need
a high-end computer, it can still be energy efficient. There are several internationally recognised component certification programs, such as Energy Star, EPEAT and 80PLus,
and by using these components and by specifying the computer for the
application (and no more), can save around
$140 per year.
Why NetSense Computers?
Download our printable Green Computing brochure.
Our business has been in operation since 1991, and building low-energy computers since 2002. Our staff have a long-standing commitment to practical environmental improvement, including experience in environmental management consulting.
To ensure your Green Computing solution best supports your business or home needs requires proper analysis of what those needs are: not in computing terms, but in terms of what you do and how you do it. With our system analysis skills, we can help identify opportunities for savings in your computer energy budget and your computer purchase budget.
Once the opportunities are identified, you need a range of solutions from which to choose (not just one pre-selected by your computer supplier). With our range of experience in client-server systems, low-power computers (including our own range of NetSense ECO PCs), custom PC construction and PC optimisation, as well the extensive research we have undertaken into high-efficiency components, we can work with you to identify the system that ensures the lowest TCO (Total Cost of Ownership: a combination of purchase costs, usage and running costs, maintenance upgrade and repair costs and disposal costs).
Few companies can beat our track record in green computing. Our focus on meeting the user's needs, rather than the “IT needs” means that we can deliver a cost-effective solution, as well as help you save the climate.
