Much can also be done with existing hardware to reduce power consumption. All computers – and many peripherals – now have advanced power management features.

The specific power management settings will depend on the uses to which the system is put: server settings are different to clerical PC, to graphical workstation (CAD, graphic design, DTP, GIS, etc), to accounting department PC, POS system, and so on.

Systems can be set to automatically start and shutdown at defined times or in response to specific events and demands; they can be set to progressively shutdown their hardware over time to balance power savings and rapid response at restart.
