Green Computing: Waste Reduction

To reduce waste, don't print unless you must: use network fax rather than “print and fax”, email secure PDF documents rather than “print and mail”, and don't automatically print “all” pages if you only need one!

If you're due to replace your old hardware (i.e., the lease is up), consider whether it needs to be replaced. Often older computers can be “re-purposed” - used for a less resource-intensive application. If not, they can often be donated to outside charities for re-use. And in the worst case, instead of dumping it in the rubbish, it can usually be “e-cycled”. In either event, you may need to ensure that all confidential and personal data is completely unrecoverable.

If you are disposing of old peripherals, some manufacturers are adopting a "cradle-to-grave" policy: they will take back the unserviceable device and recycle it. This is also something to consider when purchasing, as it is the ultimate guarantee that the disposal will be maximised: only the manufacturer knows absolutely what has gone to make a product, and therefore what can be extracted from it.
